Learning More About Your Hair

Characteristics and Growth of Hair

Before we talk more about hair loss, we need to understand the characteristics and growth of our hair. Click Here To See View Cross Section of A Growing Hair. Each slim strand of hair is made up of three layers. The outer layer of the hair strand, or shaft, is called the cuticle. It consists of tough, overlapping cells that look somewhat like shingles on a roof. They protect the hair. Beneath the cuticle lies the cortex, which makes hair strong and elastic. It holds the pigment that gives hair its colour. The medulla is the hollow tube within the cortex.

Each hair is rooted below the point where it joins the skin. It lies in a follicle- a tiny pocket- beneath the epidermis, the outer layer of skin. Many hair follicles close together produce a thick head of hair. If you have a thin head of hair, you have fewer follicles, set further apart.

Each hair grows, then rests, then drops out or is pushed out by new hair. Each follicle operates on its own timetable. Usually 90 percent of the hairs on your head are growing at one time. The other 10 percent are resting. A hair's life cycle can last anywhere from two to six years. The longer the growing stage, the longer the hair. Your eyebrows and lashes have such a short growing period that they never grow even 3 centimetres (about 1 inch) long.

When hair reaches the end of its life cycle, it falls out. Not all of your hairs are at the same stage in the life cycle at the same time; so you never lose all your hair at once. Most people lose from 25 to 250 hairs each day, which is really not many when you consider that there are over 100,000 hairs on the average age head.

Hair Care Tips For the Day
If you are active in sports, protect your hair with a hat. Most outdoor sports tend to dry out hair. Always rinse your hair thoroughly after swimming. The sun, wind, chlorine, and salt water can also dry your hair.
